Market survey of tractor/auto parts industry in

Mohali-Panchkula-Chandigarh Engineering Cluster

The Mohali – Chandigarh – Panchkula Tricity cluster has over time emerged as an important SME cluster. Of the approximately 6000 SMEs operating out of the tricity area around 2600 are engineering units manufacturing light engineering products like auto components, steel fabrications units involved mainly in sheet cutting, welding and machining. The tri-city light engineering cluster developed with the major engineering units set up in the seventies and eighties as the nucleus. Plants like the Mahindra & Mahindra, Swaraj Mazda, HMT, RCF Kapurthala and Sonalika Tractors offers a large captive OEM market for the machining and steel fabrication based enterprises in the tri-city area. The major product categories in the OEM market include; Axles, Gears, Transmission systems, Housings, Engine Parts, Steering Assemblies, Brake Systems, Lifts, Rail Coach Fabrications and Sheet Metal Fabrications.

At present, the units have confined their sales only to the OEM’s in the cluster which are basically manufacturing agriculture equipments leaving all the other options like supplying to retail spare parts market or OEM’s manufacturing automobiles outside the cluster unexplored. In order to increase the market reach of cluster products and explore potential of creating a common brand for marketing cluster products in retail parts market and international markets, a market survey is envisaged.

Under the project a market survey is being conducted of existing auto/tractors parts industry in MPC cluster to prepare a detailed project report comprising existing marketing scenario, market potentials, and possibilities of creating a marketing consortium along with facilitating linkages of units with new customers. Access Consultancy Services has been appointed as a BDSP to conduct the survey and prepare a DPR.

The survey will aim to study the existing marketing paradigm of SMEs manufacturing auto parts in the cluster and also look for possibilities for expansion of their customer base. The vendors in the cluster are unaware about potential opportunities outside the cluster and also to explore export options. Moreover the present assignment aims to increase the awareness of units to tap the retail spare part business that could bring about a significant increase in their business.
