The project organized a training programme for workers on CNC machining operations, as part of its objective to upgrade the skills of workers/employees of local industry. Twenty workers were short-listed after identifying their training needs in the area of CNC machines. Most of them were conventional lathe operators, helpers or workers in quality control with qualifications ranging from class 8 to ITI diplomas. The workers were then given training in three batches.

The training programme was designed and conducted by Sam’s Techno School, Mohali, and extended over two weeks with 10 working days. The sessions were held in Industrial Area Phase-7, Mohali for two hours each day after duty hours (5 p.m to 7 p.m), to enable the workers to attend the programme without disturbing their duty hours.

The training took place in two phases. The first phase comprised classroom sessions spread over 2–3 days, during which trainees were provided theoretical inputs. In the second phase, trainees were given hands-on training on the CNC lathe machine. Great emphasis was given to ensuring that trainees operated the CNC machine individually in the presence of the instructor, so that they would gain confidence in machine operation and be able to operate it on their own after finishing the programme. The trainees were also given training in techniques such as tool offset, wear offset, jaw boring, etc. These techniques have helped them reduce rejections, increase output in terms of number of pieces per shift, and hence improve productivity. All in all, the training programme has strengthened the skills of the participants, made them more confident, and also increased their earnings as they receive enhanced wages due to improved productivity.

The workers were offered Rs. 4000 p.m by the industry after the training programme, prior to which they were getting around Rs. 3300 p.m
